Equitable Earth Launches Public Consultation on Terrestrial Forest Conservation Methodology (M002)
As of 21st July, ERS has rebranded to Equitable Earth. All references to “ERS” refer to the standard body now operating under the Equitable Earth name.

This marks a significant milestone as Equitable Earth progresses toward its planned launch of its first methodology for terrestrial forest conservation, M002, by the end of 2025. The public consultation is a vital step to ensure the methodology is robust, equitable, and market-ready.
M002 is designed to certify Avoiding Unplanned Deforestation and/or Degradation (AUDD) REDD+ projects. Grounded in three core pillars: livelihoods, ecological condition, and carbon, M002 and the Equitable Earth Programme encompass:
Strong safeguards and clear benefits for Indigenous Peoples and local communities: the Equitable Earth Standard features a dedicated Livelihoods Pillar with clear, measurable safeguards, ensuring fairer and more effective conservation outcomes.
Centralised, standard-level carbon accounting: M002 uses advanced remote sensing and modelling to monitor performance at the standard level, delivering transparent crediting and reducing disputes.
Comprehensive treatment of deforestation and degradation: M002 fully accounts for both deforestation and forest degradation, ensuring credits accurately reflect total forest loss and its climate impact.
“Every year, we lose an area of tropical forest roughly the size of England. To change this tide, we need tools that are not only rigorous but also rooted in fairness and respect for the communities who protect the world’s remaining forests.” said Thibault Sorret, CEO of Equitable Earth. “This consultation is a key step in ensuring our work delivers on those promises.”
How to Participate in the Consultation:
Equitable Earth invites project developers, Indigenous Peoples and local communities, governments, environmental NGOs, and other stakeholders to share their perspectives.
